closing punctuation

A sentence must end with a period (.), a question mark (?), or an exclamation point (!). If the sentence ends with direct speech, the end quotation mark is placed after one of these marks.

Incorrect:
Sally said, “I am leaving for work”

Correct:
Sally said, “I am leaving for work.”

Correct:
Sally yelled, “I am leaving for work!”

Correct:
Sally asked, “Are you leaving for work?”
